A pretty seaside town known for its rich Viking history and in this story is a town of two halves – those who have (everything) and those who have little or nothing at all. This is usually a town where there is no or little crime, where people live in nice houses, drive nice cars and live like Cecilia in a rich privileged position.

The city is known for its rich Viking history and the prosperous whaling industry and so Sandefjord is the richest city in Norway. Very good as far as Cecelia is concerned. She is excessively proud of what she has accumulated, what her husband has given her and what others think of her.

The town has a dark side in this novel however just as the background of real life Sandefjord is also known as the Viking- or Whaling “Capital” of Norway. The 9th century Gokstad Ship was discovered where Goktand Mound is now – another part of history just under the surface.

Cecelia will also love the fact that it’s still a very wealthy town, popular for spa resorts and some of the most expensive beach properties in the country.

However, behind the facade, Sandefjord in the book also offers another way of life…
