Travel Guide

Dungeness – The Kent marshlands

A very unique landscape in the Kent countryside. It’s a marshland and rural area near the coast and is known for its bird population as well as the towering power station of the same name

William Shaw lives and works here. In fact he is almost part of the landscape himself. He’s  a birder, not a bird spotter as that apparently is something else) He likes getting out in the wilderness, right in the heart of nature and being close to the animals not just observing them through windowless wooden shelters.

This is the time of year when the migrating birds have started to arrive, and when William and his friend Bob would be out on the nearby reserve. This landscape is engrained in the men’s childhood, their pasts and their friendship. Murder destroys all that.

The land and setting mirror the bleak feeling of hopelessness, rural houses, the overriding power of nature and the claustrophobia that reins over the area. Those who live there and those like DS Cupidi who move here, the sense of isolation and hidden secrets vie for attention with the birds and the ghosts of the past wandering across the marshlands.
