1998,1999, 2012: A girl is murdered and two men are found guilty. But is all as it seems?
The murder of Alaska Sanders was quickly solved. Within days, two suspects were identified. One died, the other pleaded guilty. Case closed.
But, eleven years later, the death of another woman in a fast-food parking lot changes everything. Marcus Goldman, celebrity author and amateur investigator, picks up a thread that will unravel not only an open and shut case, but the very fabric of his best friend’s life.
Sergeant Perry Gahalowood, who led the original investigation, is hell-bent on setting the record straight. Teaming up with Marcus, he seeks redemption in most the intricate and testing case of his career.
New Hampshire/Massachusetts and Maine
This mystery story largely takes place in the fictional town of ‘Somerset’, New Hampshire. Somerset is a typical New England town, made up of many different places and nuances that many of the towns in this area share. Mount Pleasant isn’t a town but a mountain peak.
The town of Kennebunkport has a Goose Rocks Beach…..similar to Goose Cove in the Harry Querbet novel?
However, what is real, is the island of Vinalhaven which sounds lovely!
Oh this was good. Complex and twisty. I did not get the ending. Well, even the bits before the ending with the twists in the road. I had whiplash and was recovering at the time. Totally worth it though.I wanted to read this slowly and it took me a week. (Why do we have to go to work?) and I was stressed I couldn’t read it when I wanted to. Never mind, it was totally worth it when I did.
This is a very detailed and long investigation but it is so deftly handled. It’s hard to describe without giving away anything so I really advise you going in with not much knowledge. There’s a girl murdered of course – that is clear and two men have been accused of doing it. All else is up for grabs….and Joel Dicker does not give you an easy ride.
Very well done and I personally love his style of storylines and timelines that flick back and forth all the time. It follows the mindset of the investigators – the way you flit from one idea to the next. That works here. Takes some kind to concentrate on but it works.
Love this author’s style. Off to read the next one!
