What you need to know before your trail

Lori Finning  is a  globe-trotting freelance photographer based in Vancouver, British Columbia. She’s seen some wonderful places and met some wonderful people but this latest assignment – all the way over to Newfoundland on the East Coast looks to be a little different to what she’s done before.

Stormy Cove is a small and very isolated fishing village and the community seems to both thrive and survive on gossip as much as trade. However there is one thing that no one has ever spoken about – the unsolved murder of a teenage girl and this is what she’s here to find out about.

An outsider trying to dig her nose into something the locals seem keen to keep hidden? Lori is sure that Mona who gave her the assignment needs he to find out a lot more than she is letting on.

And from the moment she arrives, she know she is right.

Travel Guide

Newfoundland

A barren, snow-swept island and cove in Newfoundland (It can also snow eight out of twelve months in this part of the world ) is not the welcoming and save territory that Lori might have hoped for. The fishing community are remote and isolated and there is not much warmth or welcome there for outsiders such as her who ask too  many questions. At first they are very welcoming but certain issues seem out of bounds.

Newfoundland landscape and history

“Newfoundland is mainly made of rock”

Lori jokes that as the island is known as “The rock”,  her assignment will hopefully turn it into the Rock star”.

There is also an interesting link between Lori and the island in her ancestors in the war:

“Your grandfather’s submarine sank a ship off the Newfoundland coast”

The hidden death of Jacinta took place in a very unique part of the island:

The girl’s bizarre grave was discovered during the construction of a new road between Storm Cove and Cod Cove” There were some strange object found in the grave too but the island’s population is holding on to its secrets.

Great Sacred Island

A fisherman talks and says how they often would  anchor their boats off  Great Sacred Island which also means Isle of the Demons. Weird noises have been heard here and strange things have been seen. This is no ordinary landscape here…The folklore and strange noises here is intriguing. Reminiscent of ancient Canadian history and mysteries surrounding the native lands

Booktrailer Review

Louise @thebooktrailer

Lori has the kind of assignment that any photographer would love – to document the lives of the  people of a remote fishing village for a year. But you know there are underlying reasons for doing this and so your instincts are even more acute as you are dying to find out just why this place is so interesting to your boss.

I wouldn’t mind meeting Noah myself. He sounds like the perfect man you would want to meet in such a cold place. He takes her round on his snow mobile for goodness sake

It is hard for Lori to start digging for secrets and I willed her on although I wanted her to be careful as these villagers are not straight forward and there’s a lovely sense of being misled and not knowing who you can really trust.

The sense of isolation is harrowing and wait till you get to the isle of demons with the howling in the mist over the water! I would have been straight on the first bus out but luckily Lori stays as I was very keen to find out what was going on!

I think the plot and the setting complemented each other really well – paths leading nowhere and the mist covering everything up and then revealing things bit by bit

Quite creepy in places but I really warmed to Lori and found her and this novel an interesting read.
