A love story that moves around Italy, from Genoa to a home in the hills, and then across the ocean and the years to New York City.
Italy
Genoa is the key location but there are others. Not mentioned here as they give a clue as to what happens later on in the book. Some only get a mention to show where the family have lived before. Such wonderful evocation of Italy, the food, the people and the landscapes. You will want to move there after this!
What’s very interesting is the big historical event which hovers in the background. There is to be a referendum on whether to keep the monarchy and the country is spilt on what the right answer should be. The tension and concern as to what the country will look like afterwards is palpable.
New York City
A romance across the years and ages links back to that tine in Italy and the depiction of the American Italy community is very interesting. How opportunity and hard work can gift a new life. New York City and a visit to Long Island provides more of the family backstory.
Booktrailer Review
A nice but quite sad story of two star crossed lovers in Italy at the time of the referendum which was to decide if the country was to keep its monarchy. The time in Italy was wonderful with its luscious descriptions of having a coffee in the town square and walking the streets, working in a fashion shop and enjoying the villages scattered around.
We travel back and forth to Italy then and to New York where another couple will find their paths cross with this Italian couple all those years ago. The storylines were nicely done but I would have prefered longer chapters for each setting as I think I would have got a better idea of character that way. Still very enjoyable though but the ending was nicely done.
