What you need to know before your trail

Jay has been roaming rootless for years until one morning he arrives in a small Yorkshire Dales town and sees a face in the crowd which takes him back to the best and worst times of his life. In the aftermath of a failed affair, Marilyn is rebuilding her life and her barn when a lightning storm threatens to ruin everything. Should she trust Jay is who he says he is, even when he is economical with the truth? When he disappears running after an immigrant pickpocket, Marilyn is visited by the police with a tale of murder; should she keep quiet about her doubts?

Travel Guide

Yorkshire Dales

Most of the novel is set here and we travel back to Croatia and the Balkans war during flashbacks and snippets throughout the novel.

The conflict, which created modern day Croatia comes to  us bit by bit which is relevant as this is the way the memories come back to haunt Jay. The flashbacks to the war torn Balkans start to build a heartbreaking picture of war, personal circumstances and how Jay has now ended up in Yorkshire and a new life.

Croatia

Locations are vague – but the war is all encompassing..

The war has reached his village

“His best friend and his family, along with other Croats, left months ago. Others, Serb refugees from Croat and Bosnian-held areas, have come here and taken over abandoned houses, Everyone has stories of relative or friends elsewhere who have been killed, or horrifically injured , or lost their homes, The war is why he has not been out of the village, even to the next town, for a long while.”
