What you need to know before your trail

Rosewater is a town on the edge. A community formed around the edges of a mysterious alien biodome, its residents comprise the hopeful, the hungry and the helpless – people eager for a glimpse inside the dome or a taste of its rumoured healing powers.

Kaaro is a government agent with a criminal past. He has seen inside the biodome, and doesn’t care to again – but when something begins killing off others like himself, Kaaro must defy his masters to search for an answer, facing his dark history and coming to a realisation about a horrifying future.

Nigeria

Thoughts from the author:

“By some estimates one in four black people you meet will either be Nigerians or have genetic contributors from there.

My genes are partly from Nigeria and I’ve spent time there, so when it came to deciding where to set ROSEWATER it was a no-brainer. For me, the most interesting part of writing this book has been discussions with my editor, explaining how things are different, and how Anthropology, Google and Wikipedia are good, but they can’t substitute for lived-experience. For example, how the word ‘doll’ can mean doll, teddy bear, action figure or effigy. English is the national language, but words are not used in exactly the same way. Linguistic drift aside, even the reaction to the unknown is different, and playing with that gave me a lot of joy. We’ve already encountered alien invasions, of course. The Christian missionaries, the British, the various others who would bring us religions.

Since we had prior experience, I thought it prudent to have aliens visit again.”
