Travel Guide

Copenhagen and Nyboder

It was Christian IV who took the initiative to build the distinctive townhouses. They would house the Navy people, and the little town had always special status with their own schools, hospital and police.

On the other hand, there was the forced service of 16-20 years, and no freedom of choice for families with sons, after confirmation was sent to Holmen to become sailors, artisans or gunners. The forced duty was repealed in 1856, more than 200 years after the first houses were completed.

A unique part of the city and a reminder of its past  – only one of the first houses that Christian IV built still remains -St. Paul’s Street 24. Today it stands as a musuem where you can visit the Nyboder Memorial Rooms, and experience a little of the old Nyboder Environment

These are the oldest houses in the city and some of the prettiest – keep an eye out for the funny street names like Heart’s Delight Street, Thyme Street, Crocodile Street, Dolphin Street and Tiger Street.
