What you need to know before your trail

Two young brothers wake up to find themselves bound and tied up in an old boathouse. They seem to be alone but are in no doubt that their kidnapper will not be far…Their only chance is to scrap something together – a splinter for writing and blood for ink. This is  message of desperation.

When Carl Mørck, detective in the Copenhagen Department Q of the police department receives this message, he wonders if the case is as cold as would first appear.

Travel Guide

If, like most people and certainly the booktrailers, you are one of those people who believes that a washed up a bottle on a beach, a message in a bottle is a very romantic notion then you could not be more wrong. For this is the start of a nightmare and of ultimately ‘Redemption.’

The story starts in Scotland and on a remote beach in John O’Groats where a bottle is washed up with a message, written in blood.

“John O’Groats, Scotland’s very extremity”

The suspicious object is soon transferred to the police department in Wick before being handed over to Department Q of the Copenhagen police which investigates cold cases. At first Carl Mørck and his team believe it to be related to some kind of kidnapping  – a cold case, but just how cold or warm this case is soon becomes clear.

Department Q is of course the main setting for the investigation but we are taken around Copenhagen by Carl Mørck and his team as they look into the old message. Their Copenhagen is one of narrow streets, dark secrets and a feud wright on the doorstep between immigrant gangs and bikers wanting a part of the drugs pie –

The cauldron that was Copenhagen had gone off the boil for a moment, The gang war was not the people’s war.

Together with religious confusion, cases from the past and present merging and overlapping at will, Department Q has its work cut out. There are fires being lit, figuratively and literally over the city.

Copenhagen is gradually seeping into that small protected basement of the police HQ and the stench of the cases is becoming strong..
