Travel Guide

Atlanta

Atlanta is a city experiencing some cruel and bitter crimes if you step inside the Atlanta of Karin Slaughter’s novels. However she guides you into its deep and dark fictional underbelly with a deft hand, you don’t even feel the first blow which catapults you into her world. Just as well as what follows is graphic indeed. Gruesome and Graphic. A pretty park area – Stone Mountain Park which is the scene for one crime adds to the contrast of horrible things happening to nice people in nice areas.

This is the case of a missing child – a grieving family who has suffered for twenty years without any answers.

Inside the family home

The most frightening setting is inside the mind and the computers of some of the characters such as Claire’s husband. This is a world which was hidden in plain sight and which she knew nothing of. A sinister, dark world full of depravity you will not believe

This book really shows how a crime affects more than the victim. How a family copes with the aftermath but more importantly once the initial grief has worn off – that’s when people can really change and be affected.

The world of pretty

Someone is targeting pretty girls. This does not go unnoticed by society and the media:

“Missing teenage girl. White. Middle class. Very Pretty.

No one ever seemed quite as outraged when an ugly woman went missing”.

Turns the media and society’s relationship with what makes a victim on its head and really gets into the mindset of why some crimes are reported and fixated on more than others.

Booktrailer Review

Claire: @thebooktrailer

Well I’m just glad I wasn’t eating or drinking anything when I read this as I kept having to put it down and check my stomach was in its right place and not in my throat as it seemed. This is graphic and then some. I felt so sorry for the family about what happened and just can’t imagine how awful it must be to have someone missing like that. Then Claire’s husband! On my god, I almost shut the book but I couldn’t as it was like watching a car crash – I knew I’d feel sick but I couldn’t turn away. Karin Slaughter you are one scary lady and although this book shocked and horrified me in equal measure, it was one which I really ripped through the pages as it caught me by the neck very early on and didn’t let up for a second. I am off to read something like Little House on the Prairie now – something at the other end of the scale as far away from this as I can possibly go. But having said that, I am coming back. Slaughter by name and Slaughter by nature is just addictive and I want more.
