What you need to know before your trail

Today is the first day of the rest of your life is the motto on a plate in the kitchen at home, and Tess can’t get it out of her head, even though she’s in Florence for a final, idyllic holiday before university. Her life is about to change forever – but not in the way she expects.

Gus and his parents are also on holiday in Florence. Their lives have already changed suddenly and dramatically. Gus tries to be a dutiful son, but longs to escape and discover what sort of person he is going to be.
For one day, the paths of these two eighteen-year-olds will criss-cross before they each return to England.

Over the course of the next sixteen years, life and love will offer them very different challenges. Separated by distance and chance, there’s no way the two of them are ever going to meet each other properly . . . or is there?

Travel Guide

Florence

“The view of Florence from the campsite, all terracotta domes and white marble towers shimmering against a flat blue sky , was so like it was supposed to be, I had this strange feeling of sadness, as if I was missing it already”

Her last free day spent in Florence the day before her life changes. They visit the Duomo, take photographs and then take the backstreet towards Santa Croce to eat ice cream. They take a bus ride to the ancient hill town of Fiesole which after Florence’s busy streets is a nice contrast.

But it’s the magic of Florence which attracts both Tess and Gus start their journey towards each other – the art galleries, the twisty streets, the unmistakable Italian magic – oh and let’s not forget the marvellous hilltop town of Fiesole – well worth a visit – Tess will tell you that!
