Invisibles

Why a Booktrail?

1960s/70s and early 2000s: Ed Siegle takes you on a tour of Brazil from the very cover itself!

  • ISBN: 978-0956559913
  • Genre: Fiction

What you need to know before your trail

Joel lives in Brighton working as a dentist. His father disappeared in Rio when he was younger and is presumed dead but Joel refuses to believe this and wants to find out if his father is really alive.

When he sees a news report of a hijacked bus (apparently based on a real life event which happened in June 2000) he is sure that it’s his father standing there in the background. Was it really him ?

Joel has to find out and so he goes to stay with a friend in Rio. What will he find when he gets there and are his stories and memories he has of his father really as he remembers them?

Who is the man he is searching? What is he searching for? And what will he find when he gets to Rio?

Travel Guide

This booktrail is based on the trail from Ed Siegle himself. He writes passionately about the setting on his website and we’ve picked a selection here. Read information on the real life highjacking case

Cantagalo

Cantagalo is a favela of Brazil and was the inspiration for the cover. In Invisibles Nelson claims to have seen Gilberto there.

Ipanema

– The author lived in the flat Liam inhabits in Invisibles, a block from Ipanema beach; now that is taking the booktrailing experience very seriously! Brilliant.
Tiffany’s – Liam rents an apartment in Tiffany’s and Joel stays there when he’s in Rio and is very close to the sea.
The Confeitaria Colombo – a Belle Epoque and Art Nouveau jewel – tea room and restaurant. In Invisibles Eva and Zemané have lunch here. Stunning!
Lapa – Famous for its white viaduct, over which the yellow trams rattle up into Santa Teresa, and the streets around the arches

Candelária Church (Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Candelária) – Candelária church lies in the city’s main business district, and was the scene of a massacre of street children in 1993. One of the children that escaped the massacre, Sandro Rosa do Nascimento, was involved in the hijack of Bus 174 in June 2000.

Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa, through the arches in Lapa:Nelson walks up from Lapa into Santa Teresa, through the arches in Lapa. Rua Mem de Sa and Rua Riachuelo. Head up the hill like Nelson towards Santa Teresa.
Rua Joaquim Murtinho – at the top you get to see the mansions of Santa Teresa looming ahead. What amazing views here! Have your camera to hand!Parati
Parati is situated on the bay of Ilha Grande – Joel and Nelson travel to Parati in Invisibles to hunt for Joel’s father and  because Nelson has always wanted to go there.

England – Brighton

Hanover – Both Joel and Jackie live in the Hanover area of Brighton.
Hove Lawns – Tony lives in Hove
Casablanca’s –a jazz club – is a bit of a Brighton institution, and is where Debbie and Emma go to on an evening when they can’t work out what to do, or where to go.
Whitehawk – an area of Brighton – Ed says that he included this part of Brighton in Invisibles because it is an area viewed with suspicion as are those who live there. A direct contrast is made between how people view the favelas of Brazil.
