What you need to know before your trail

Kaitlyn Best is stuck in a rut. So when she discovers she’s pregnant after a one-night-stand with Alex, her school crush, she throws caution to the wind and accepts his offer to make a new life together in the depths of the Lake District, far from her home… and her demons.

But Alex is not what he seems. And when Kaitlyn’s world begins to crumble before her eyes, she realises she barely knows the man she has agreed to spend the rest of her life with.

Since Alex won’t tell her his secrets, Kaitlyn vows to find them out for herself. But when she uncovers the truth, she realises she has made a terrible mistake…

Travel Guide

The Lake District

A gorgeous part of the world and one of the best gardens in England in many ways.

A part of paradise can however, be a prison when you are with the wrong person, and living with that person in a remote vicarage in Grasmere…

The setting in the book plays a role of showing isolation against a tapestry of beauty but with ugly strokes of violence and domestic abuse ripping the happy scenes to shreds. The calm, serene setting is  what makes the story even more chilling…

Travel tips garnered from the novel:

Wordsworth grave

The house where the couple live is not far from William Wordsworth grave. It’s the literary heritage which Kaitlyn likes to talk about and think about. She plans to visit here with Alex. If you visit here, be sure to also go to St Oswald’s Church where the man is now buried. Rydal Mount is where he used to live. Lovely seeing a character be so interested in a literary great!

Allan Bank

There’s no old vicarage but this is a nice home just outside of Grasmere..

Keswick

A major Lakes town with shops and this is where the girls in the novel go to get what they need. It’s an escape from the quiet elsewhere.

Glen Rothay Hotel

Author recommended for a stay and this is where a wedding in the novel takes place.

The Coffin Trail

Another activity recommended by one of the characters. Ominous when it comes to this book though! This walking route is famous as it takes in the old coffin road where people used to take the dead of Rydal to the nearest church. Very ominous.

Booktrailer Review

Susan: @thebooktrailer

This is the first book that I’ve read where you can slowly see how a man can gradually work a woman down until she’s completely under his control. ( It can happen the other way too of course!) Scary scary stuff. If you’ve ever suffered from control to any degree from a partner, this is going to resonate. It’s not how you think, it’s not in the way you think and even if you’re strong, independent and streetwise, it can creep up on you without warning.

That makes this a particularly scary read. Chilling in so many ways. I was shouting at the female of the story, wondering what the next red flag would be and willing her to see it, for someone else to see it. And for him to come to a cropper.

The story is very cleverly written and handled. The fact it;s set in the Lake District makes this all the more powerful. Remote location, far away from where you’ve lived before. The start of a perfect life in the lakes?

Blimey.
