Travel Guide

The island

The Wasteland

The girls here give their voice, four in total and each girl has a unique view of the island’s goings on and the people she lives amongst.

There is talk of the Wanderers, those who have gone before and who have experience of the outside world. Each girl waits for her summer of fruition where she will become a woman Before that time however, they all have one summer where they can run free..or as free as a woman here ever can.

But the moment one of them sees something she shouldn’t – and the whole world collapses. Rebellion is not far behind as the girls become women and the women realise the horrors of the world they’re in

This is a chilling, cold and bleak dystopian world. Nothing is free and nothing has the will to think and do as they please. Women are prisoners in every sense of the word. It’s the unknown that’s scary but also the depiction and story behind the Wasteland. Just what is the world like outside –

What is the world like outside? Is it some decimated wasteland as the island inhabitants led to believe or have their forefathers created an island world and a prison of their own making?

The island is claustrophobic, tense, and violent. The religion, the regime, the everyday….who is controlling who and why?

Amish country

The setting depicted in the book is fictional but it does make you think a little of the Amish community for their plain and simple way of life – living differently to the outside world and within their own set of rules. The novel is absolutely  NOT representative of  the Amish community as this community is based on pastoral and family life. The links and map guide is purely there to show how communities do exist in the world where they live by their own rules and eshew modern technology and ideas which are commonplace in the outsider world.
