What you need to know before your trail

One hot summer’s day, an old flame turns up at Lafferton HQ and Simon Serrailler is catapulted back to his days as a fresh-faced PC in the Met.

That long febrile summer in the early 1990s, London was reeling from one IRA bomb warning after another. Sirens. Blue lights. Tyres screaming. People running. The army called in. And Simon in the thick of it. Until he’s pulled aside and put on a very different kind of job: his first undercover op awaits. Will the young Simon be able to hold his nerve? Or is he walking into a trap?

Travel Guide

London

A very short visit to the city given that is a short story, so the city is really only a backdrop to the action. The areas of Soho and of course the fictional Lafferton HQ are the main areas of interest. There are also many places described as havens for trouble such as Delville Way where the flats are which Simon knows as a haven for lowlife, drug dealers and petty criminals so just as well it’s a fictional place.

Old Haunts is set before the life changing injuries Simon sustained in The Soul of Discretion. Simon is reminded of the experiences he had during the early 1990s when the Met was experiencing a spate of hoax coded IRA bomb warnings.
