1833: The mother of the man who created The Periodic Table has a tale to tell
Maria Mendeleeva – mother of Dmitri Mendeleev, who devised the Periodic Table of the Elements – is a heroine like no other. A woman who refuses to be quashed by circumstance, Maria fights against the strictures of her time to gain an education for herself and for her children as she traverses the Urals of Russia seeking opportunity and safety for her family.
Maria Mendeleeva
Mendeleeva came from a well-known family of Siberian merchants.
Maria Mendeleeva’s mother died giving birth to her, and so she was raised by her nanny. She was not allowed to go to school due to sexism, and instead learned by herself from her father’s large collection of books.
Her son, Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev, was a Russian chemist known for formulating the periodic law and creating a version of the periodic table of elements.
