With war imminent in Poland, knowing the dangers her people face, Tamar flees to London while her fiancé, Isaac, must stay and fulfil his duty to his country. He carries with him a silver clasp from Tamar’s bracelet as a token of her love.
In the heart of the East End, Tamar strikes up a friendship with two women; but when the devastation of war reaches Tamar’s doorstep, she is recruited for espionage. Though she fears for her own life, the thought of Isaac being taken from her is worse still.
When Tamar’s nightmare comes true, her world is shattered, and she returns to London – to the women and community she has come to know as her family and home. Together, they begin to rebuild their lives. And then Isaac’s silver clasp returns . . .

The majority of the novel is set in London around the area of Spitalfields and it showcases the community that built up around pockets of London between locals and those having to flee from other lands. The women in this novel show what struggles they had and why they stuck together during a very troubling time in the world.
