Recovering from the tragic death of his wife, Tony Sheridan goes to stay with his sister-in-law, Lucy, and her husband.Their home is a bizarre moated house deep in the Rutland countryside, known as Otherways.
Disturbed by memories of his wife, and a growing attraction to Lucy, Sheridan is also troubled by weird and vivid dreams. Soon he learns that Otherways is a house steeped in a history of murder and wartime treason. And it seems that these crimes hold an eerie influence over the present inhabitants.

Rutland
Rutland Water which features in the novel is a very nice and scenic part of the country to visit:
“The top rooms had the widest-ranging views, out between the elms and oaks that looked as if they’d been there long before the house was even dreamed of, and across Rutland Water on either side towards gentle, rolling countryside.”

Hambleton Peninsula
We soon caught our first view of Rutland water, benign and shimmering in the afternoon sun. It was the warmest and stillest part of the day. Yachts and pleasure craft were out on the lake. Sunday cyclists were thickly bunched on the track around its perimeter. It all looked placid and pretty and oh so permanent.
As we started up Barnsdale Hill and I gazed across at the Hambleton Peninsula, I remembered James Milner’s dream of just this scene. What couldn’t be and what was threaded into the past as well as the future.
