2025: A mysterious invitation to drink the oldest bottle of wine in the world – what could possibly go wrong?
Wine influencer Avery has given up her exploitative but fiercely fought sommelier job to be here, hoping it will earn her the prestige and funds she needs to survive. Rising-star sommelier Cosmo comes from privilege but is struggling to conceal that his life is in freefall. Millionaire Sonny earns scorn for dabbling in his tacky supermarket wine brand, while caustic French critic Maëlys hovers, poised to record their indiscretions. Finally, there’s the enigmatic Master, who relishes the sway he holds over his guests almost as much as his partner, Tao, resents it.
As glasses are emptied, rivalries fermented and secrets spilled, each must confront hard truths. Heady and subtly powerful, Lush is a bittersweet reckoning with class, beauty, hedonism and desire.
France and its vineyards
The novel is vague on location but the fictional vineyard in the book is somewhere in the south of France. Now this is one of the most famous places for wine:
Bordeaux
Bordeaux is one of the most famous French wine regions, located in southern France on the Atlantic Ocean. It is renowned for its bold red blends, often made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Burgundy
The Burgundy region runs from Auxerre in the north to Mâcon in the south, or to Lyon if the Beaujolais area is included as part of Burgundy. Chablis, a white wine made from Chardonnay grapes, is produced in the area around Auxerre.
Rhône Valley
Features both red and white wines, with notable wineries like Domaine Duzyak and Domaine Montteruse.
