What you need to know before your trail

A peaceful Sunday morning in Rutland is shattered when a dead body is discovered on the rocks at Normanton Church.

The victim has been laid out in a crucifixion pose, facing the altar. DI Caroline Hills is certain there’s a religious connection — one which threatens the tranquility of life in the area.

The killer has gone to extraordinary lengths to make the symbolism clear. And the deaths will continue until Caroline and DS Dexter Antoine uncover the truth behind the dark secret — and what lies beneath.

Travel Guide

Rutland

Oakham is well evoked in the novel. Normanton Church is the star of the show – a crime scene of course, but in real life, a very nice church on the banks of a lake. The church is owned by Anglian Water and is now used as a venue for weddings and concerts. It formerly housed a museum recording the history of Rutland Water.

“The history of Rutland Water – created by deliberately flooding a valley, and the inhabited villages within it, is very evocative.”

Oakham

Oakham is a well-preserved medieval market town atmosphere, dominated by Oakham Castle, featuring the finest surviving example of Norman domestic architecture in Europe apparently. Much of the novel takes place here and you get to see the streets of this very nice place – albeit in a darker sense. But from the hotel to the lake, it’s a very nice  place to explore!
