1945- 1956:The story of two young Hungarian basketball players
Tibor Fischer’s hilarious first novel follows the adventures of two young Hungarian basketball players through the turbulent years between the end of World War II and the revolution of 1956. In this spirited indictment of totalitarianism, the two improbable heroes, Pataki and Gyuri, travel the length and breadth of Hungary in an epic quest for food, lodging, and female companionship.
The book is named after the Hungarian expression “under a frog’s arse, down a coalmine”, which describes an extremely low point in someone’s life – this is a somewhat tragic-comedy situation that Hungary faced at the time the novel takes place, ie the 1940s and 1950s.
There won’t be many authors who can see, let alone convey any comedy (unless it’s black) about life under a totalitarian regime, but this is a story of a city under extreme duress with a the gallows humour needed to see you through.
This is the story of a journey through a country during one of its most dangerous and depressing period in history. First Budapest, then Szeged and Mako….there’s quite the list of short stays and stopovers on this journey of many layers.
