Thornby Manor, sadly fictional, but very real in many ways:

‘The air grew thicker and the sky grew darker, and there – suddenly – was Thornby Manor. I would never forget the first time I saw it. It emerged from the fog like a monolith carved from a rock face: an imposing edifice of slate-grey brick smothered in a mass of impenetrable vines, whose twisted talons were embedded deep within the stone.
