What you need to know before your trail

The year is 1793, Stockholm. King Gustav of Sweden has been assassinated, years of foreign wars have emptied the treasuries, and the realm is governed by a self-interested elite, leaving its citizens to suffer. On the streets, malcontent and paranoia abound.

A body is found in the city’s swamp by a watchman, Mickel Cardell, and the case is handed over to investigator Cecil Winge, who is dying of consumption. Together, Winge and Cardell become embroiled in a brutal world of guttersnipes and thieves, mercenaries and madams, and one death will expose a city rotten with corruption beneath its powdered and painted veneer.

Travel Guide

Travel to 18th century Stockholm

This is a dark, dark picture of Sweden, royalty and the fight to rule at all costs.

The whole picture is one of darkness and dankness, utter depravity and gore. Streets team with poverty and violance, corruption and strife.

Where can Cardell and Winge hope to find justice and salvation in these dark, grimy streets? They are an unlikely pairing – Mikel spends most of his time getting drunk. He lost an arm in the Russo-Swedish War and this continues to haunt him waking and sleeping states. Cecil Winge on the other hand is a brilliant lawyer turned investigator. However he too is very fragile as is dying from consumption.

Diplomacy and the rule of law is at risk – King Gustav has been assassinated and there is a gap in power as the Crown Prince is not yet old enough to rule alone. News of the storming of the Bastille and the French Revolution have stirred up rumours of conspiracies and this lends itself well to opening up the sequences of events to include what is going on in the rest of the world.
