What you need to know before your trail

Grace La Mottée, the island’s only librarian, is ordered to destroy books which threaten the new regime. Instead, she hides the stories away in secret. Along with her headstrong best friend, postwoman Bea Rose, she wants to fight back. So she forms the wartime book club: a lifeline, offering fearful islanders the joy and escapism of reading.

But as the occupation drags on, the women’s quiet acts of bravery become more perilous – and more important – than ever before. And, when tensions turn to violence, they are forced to face the true, terrible cost of resistance . .

Travel Guide

Jersey

This amazing read takes place on Jersey and in the library which was the focus of a book club during the war. This truly is an amazing piece of writing and a literary experience that is hard to beat. It will remind you of the The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society with its dusty charm, island life and strength of the characters within.

Grace, the head librarian decides to start The Wartime Library Book Club, but  it has to be approved by the German officials first. She has to tell them and prove to them what they will be reading  and a German guard has to attend the meetings.

The situation on Jersey is hard to read about – the shortages, the abuse, the poverty and all because of the German occupation.

Each chapter starts off with the name of a banned book which is the perfect way of showing just what books offer, what kind of escape they offer and the stupid reasons some people might think they should be banned.
