The location for the Van Veeteren series of novels is the fictional town of Maardam. It’s never really established where it is although there are plenty of clues to suggest it’s somewhere in the Netherlands due to the names of the characters and towns nearby.
The fictional town has some 300,000 people living in it.
As for setting, landscape and the more liberal Nordic Noir attitudes, there is a keen sense of Scandinavia and Sweden throughout the novels. The author now lives in New York but was born in Kulma in Sweden so this is a good place to go to see if you can see any clues which might have made up the town of Maarsdam.
