Travel Guide
Cornwall and Samaki Island (Tanzania)
While the village in Cornwall appears to be a fictionalized version of Mevagissey, its name comes from St Piran, the real-life patron saint of Cornwall.
Author John Ironmonger created the island specifically for his novel The Angel of St Piran
He could have named it using the Swahili word “samaki”, which translates to “fish” in English.
The island could be heavily inspired by real-world locations such as places in and around western Tanzania and the primate sanctuaries found around Lake Victoria.
