What you need to know before your trail

Sergeant Logan McCrae is in the middle of a missing-persons case when a body turns up – naked with their hands tied behind its back. The Major Investigation team comes in from Aberdeen but Logan’s ex-boss expects Logan to do the work for her. To add to his problems, a new Superintendent is on her way up from the Serious Organised Crime Task Force, and she’s not going to make Logans’ life easy by any means. There’s also something brewing in the Aberdeen criminal underbelly and Logan is stuck right in the middle. In the middle of a war..

Travel Guide

Logan is not a happy man. He used to be working cases for Aberdeen CID but was moved to the areas around Banff and Macduff where he currently is solving less run of the mill cases, certainly not of the level he was involved with before.

This latest case starts off as looking for a business man from  the local area only to find a rather gruesome discovery. The local woods are not usually the scene for this kind of crime and so provincial policing suddenly becomes a lot more serious.

The links between his former life in Aberdeen also continue when the police from here merge with his small station and the Aberdeen gang warfare looks set to spread north.

There’s nothing like the names in Stuart MacBride’s novels- Wee Hamish Mowat for example and Lumpy. With Steel’s rather unusual way of policing, this is  a new and novel way of experiencing a police procedural and the complications of police working across borders. Some bosses have bones to pick with an officer such as Logan – so much so that the police station should be in Double Crossing Street – yet despite this, the Scottish banter and wit continues to thrive.

Poor Logan, the man does not a great deal of luck. Yet he always survives. Well if the violence and the weather doesn’t kill him, nothing will. Not going to be on any tourist website anytime soon!
