The Red Barn murder

The Red Barn Murder was a notorious murder committed in 1827. Red Barn which was situated on Barnfield Hill.

A young woman by the name of Maria Marten was shot dead by her lover William Corder. They’d agreed to meet at the Red Barn wihch was a local landmark as it had a half red clay-tiled roof, the rest of it beig thatched.They had planned to elope and later on Maria’s family got letters from Corder saying they were both in good health.  Her stepmother apparently had a dream about Maria having been murdered and her body was found in the barn.

Corder was found in London and brought back to Suffolk to be tried. He was hanged at Bury St Edmunds in 1828.
