The main protagonist in the novel is from Germany and so has to move somewhere very different, in a new country and a new town! Alabama is the southern Gothic state in the USA and unique in many ways. The town they move to is called Delilah which makes them all laugh. This is fictional however but the flavour of Gothic southern style is all around.
The town is a character but it’s the rest of the novel that adds the real flavour; immigration, homophobia, religion and so much more.
Small town Alabama is a backdrop as there is so much more going on here.
