DCI Andy Gilchrist is assigned to the case of a missing three year old and he soon realises that this is going to be a lot more harrowing and complex than other cases of this type. He suspects the girl’s mother, Andrea,  of somehow being involved with her daughter’s disappearance, or even worse, her murder.

On top of that, Andrea herself is the daughter of Dougal Davis, a former MSP who had to resign from the Scottish Parliament having been accused of physically abusing his third wife. He’s now a formidable business man who is not happy to see Gilchrist on this case.

The Gilchrist hits upon a lead that could just take the case forward, but this lead doesn’t last viable for long. Something else is brewing, a family secret so deeply buried that it’s going to take a lot to drag out into the open.
