What you need to know before your trail

This is the story of the trials of a nine year-old girl named Theo, whose mother, Rae, gave birth to her when only a teen. She is dragged from school to school across Vancouver. Her mother treats her badly and neglects her. When you see how Theo is forced to dance in the square like a performing monkey you wonder which is the lesser of the two evils.

Theo survives by escaping into books. Many of the books Theo reads are named through the novel. She has imagined the perfect family in her head and when she gets the chance to live with her Aunt in Victoria, she hopes this is the start of greater things.

Travel Guide

The journey from Vancouver to Vancouver Island

Vancouver

They take the ferry from Vancouver over to the island – bcferries.com

“Suddenly the sea appeared, dim mountains in the distance and they followed the line of cars across a long spit that led over the water like a bridge to the ferry terminal”

Vancouver Island

Ross Bay Cemetery – One of the main settings in the novel is this cemetery which features a ghost.  Many of the graves inspired the author’s writing.

“Huge trees spread their branches against the clearing sky. The grass was studded with gravestone, some upright and some flat; it looked like a grey and green chessboard.”

Emily Carr House

They become aware of the great literary lady linked to this island and so go to see her house. She is buried in the Ross Bay Cemetery.
