What you need to know before your trail

It’s 1968, and the fishermen of Kinloch are preparing to celebrate the old New Year on the twelfth of January. The annual pilgrimage to the Auld Stones is a tradition that goes back beyond memory, and young Hamish, first mate on the Girl Maggie, is chuffed that he’s been invited to this exclusive gathering – usually reserved for the most senior members of Kinloch’s fishing community.

Travel Guide

Kinloch

The village in the novel is not real but it’s  somewhere in the Mull of Kintyre. Two fishermen attempt to transport an illicit stash of whisky to the nearby village of Firdale, where prices at the local hotel have recently gone through the roof.

In this small seaside town,  local myths and legends mix with cosy crime and characters who are almost too big for the page. This has charm and brings out the charm of the area, the coastal village, the people who have lived there for years and the fishing community and its livelihood.

The real setting, the Mull of Kintyre has many a rocky headland where the Old Stones in the novel really could be!
