Manchester Victorian Baths

The inspiration for The Drowning of Arthur Braxton started with a place – Victoria Baths on Hathersage Road in Manchester.

The baths opened in 1906 and was described as a ‘water palace of which every citizen in Manchester can be proud”.

It helped the people of central Manchester for 87 years until it th council said to had to close in 1993.

This sets the scene for the inspiration for Arthur’s tory, but the real story can also be found on BBC’s Restoration programme in 2003
