What you need to know before your trail

There were two trees in Molly’s life – one she could no longer bear to be around and another that was calling her back.

Haunted by grief and unable to live the life she once knew, Molly is drawn to Sycamore Gap. It’s the only place that makes sense to her – where the legendary tree stood alone beside Hadrian’s Wall for generations, a symbol of strength, memory and belonging.

On the night before the beloved tree is brutally felled in an act that shocks and devastates the nation, Molly finds herself standing beneath its branches.

And something shifts.

Pulled into a world far older and wilder than her own, Molly is swept back to ancient Britain, into a world of Iron Age tribes, druids and old magic, at the time when Hadrian’s Wall is being constructed.

As the line between past and present blurs, Molly rediscovers her spark and creativity and uncovers a fierce power buried deep within herself – one fuelled by grief, rebellion and hope.

Travel Guide

Author mini guide of Northumberland

1.      The Shoe Tree, Armstrong Park, Newcastle – a meeting place for Molly and Jez, and a place of protest.

2.      Housteads Roman Fort. – this is where Molly alights from the AD122 bus, meets the girl in the kiosk who is important to the story later on, and where Jez buy him and Molly two Tree of Life necklaces that they put on each other, kneeling under the branches of the tree at Sycamore Gap – not quite an engagement, but near enough.

3.      Sycamore Gap. – the site where the iconic sycamore tree stood for generations and where Molly feels pulled to – the only place that means anything to her and Jez. Felled in a mindless act of vandalism on 28th September 2023.

4.      The bothy at Haughton Green: fictionalised in the story and the place where Molly and Jez spend their first night together in front of a flickering fire, and where Molly is later transported back to AD122 and finds the bothy had turned into an Iron age roundhouse.

5.      The yew tree behind St Cuthbert’s Church at Beltingham – thought to be the site of a druid’s grove – the very one an Iron Age mob drag Molly to, to explain her presence in the tribe to the druids, and where she returns to with her Nan and finds her spark.

6.      Ouseburn – where the day of protest takes place, Molly standing outside the Cluny with a megaphone. The Community Farm there is fictionalised as the City Farm, and the Stepney Riding stables get a mention too, as the place where Grandad parks his van.
