Allison Rushby, was inspired to write the book after seeing an anatomical Venus in a museum in Vienna. The novel is primarily set in London and Seoul is only mentioned at the start.
The museum – Josephinium – is in Vienna but its on the map as its so key to the story.

The term “slashed beauty” refers to the fact that these models were composed of multiple removable layers that could be “slashed open” to reveal internal organs.
