What you need to know before your trail

Following on from her adventures in Tilos in Falling in Honey, this book sees the adventures step up a notch.

She  moves alone into the Honey Factory on a tiny Greek island and expects a paradise of sorts, even bringing with her a laptop, her hiking boots and plans to enjoy the landscape and culture as well as the ouzo, but well, life is full of surprises!

Not only does she meet a nice fisherman, she fully immerses herself into the culture and the island’s daily life. One minute she’s working in the café on the beach, or dancing at local festivals, the next she’s dodging winter storms and even makes friends of the canine variety. There is a lot more to this island that she first thought.

Travel Guide

Oh if you’ve ever imagined what it would be like to move away to a Greek island and to fully embrace the land and its people, then this is the literary trail for you.

She paints a picture of the island with her pen as if it were a paintbrush:

“Megalo Chorio ..is  a small settlement of white houses with blue shutters and doors, none quite the same, each facing a slightly different angle, hemmed in by a cluster of pine trees on the otherwise rocky slopes of a steep hill”

The island is clearly a place of wonder – the olive trees, the beaches, the sun and the sand. It’s a simpler life in many ways and certainly a more idyllic one even if the mopeds buzzing along the roads is like a fly in your ear or the onset of real life as Jen stays on the island once the tourists have gone and really starts to go Greek
The island is one of discovery:

Keep your cups upside down for example so you don’t accidentally drink a  scorpion

Keep things as you never know when something old can come in handy. You can hardly just pop out and buy new things on an island

You’ll be cursing the noise of the michanaki (moped) before long

You really shouldn’t eat a dead seahorse

Don’t forget the food:

Aubergine in olive oil, dolmaldes, moussaka and of course Ouzo..
