The Super Bowl of Books

  • Submitted: 7th February 2016

Whether you are a fan of the superbowl in the USA or not, we thought we’d put together an alternative superbowl for those of you who prefer reading to sport or who think quite rightly that reading is a sport. And that it’s the best sport there is.

                 The Super Bowl of Books

Kicking off in February – this team of books has been put together for their literary prowess and their ability to fight and survive an increasingly crowded fiction field.  But these look set to be amongst the best players this month and early rumours are that each and every one of them is going to give their all and deliver some fantastic results.

Player: Oscar de Muriel

Position – Quarterback

The quarterback is the player who receives the ball from the center to start the play. This is an apt description for Oscar de Muriel who kick starts events in Edinburgh before moving the action down to Lancaster and the home of the LAncaster witches. Oscar is fearless for his novels contain everything from supernatural events to witchery goings on and there’s even a plot involving an asylum in this latest novel. The favourites Frey and McGray are back with a vengeance and although not on their hunting ground of Edinburgh for long, it seems that even being on new away turf cannot stop them from delivering the goods. So what are the match conditions?

“…agitated: nurses and orderlies ran everywhere and the eerie shouts of countless inmates filled the place like an army of ghouls.”

Player- Rachel Hore

Position – Defense

Rachel comes fighting with a story about several people who come to live together under one roof in North London. The house on Bellevue Gardens is a kind of refuge for its owner has had this as her home for many years and now wants to share it with others, others who need a place to stay, escaping their old lives and starting again. Leonie, the owner has had this house as a refuge herself and now has opened its doors so to speak hoping that it can help others. Every person in that house has come to stay for a reason and their stories are varied and often quite sad. When the house itself starts to need a little bit of TLC, the question is whether Leonie and the others can help it when it has practically saved them. Leonie will do anything it takes to defend her home.

Player- James Long

Position – Cornerback

James Long is  a cornerback player of literature – his job is to contain the runner, either by directing him back to the middle of the field to be tackled or some other way. This is like the central character of Ferney who is always trying to direct Gally Martin to the clues in plain sight regarding her past. He knows she had a past life but she can’t see it, so it’s Ferney’s job to try and direct events to make Gally realise the truth. It’s with some skill and technique that he enters the field to see just what kind of work he is going to have in front of him. He might have to tackle the situation in other ways in order to hit the goal. And it’s not going to be easy. Would you believe someone if they told you you’d lived before?

Team Medic: RobMcCarthy aka ‘The doc”

If you’re down and you need a bit of  a boost. A man to get you on your feet or if you’re a crim , to send you spinning and crashing to the floor. There is literally no defence against this man. He is hardcore and means business. He’s not going to mop your brow either but will be there in a crisis. His opening line is that the hearing is the last sense to go so that’s why he makes such an impact for if you don’t listen to him, you’re not getting back into the game. Dr Harry Kent takes no prisoners – well there’s a crim at the start of the book tries to take one of him – but he’s goes in there and tackles with the best of them. A cross between a team player and a medic. He is a new man to the field of forensic and police procedural but we’re sure he’ll be playing in the fiction field for a long time to come.

Who’s on your team for the #superbowl in February?
